Two speakers from South Sudan are at Lewes Road URC, Brighton, on Tuesday 13 October, 7pm to 9.30pm, with the former Bishop of Salisbury. Register online.

Two people working in South Sudan will speak at Lewes Road United Reformed Church in Brighton next Tuesday, 13 October, as the first stop on a five-date Christian Aid roadshow around England. The evening runs from 7pm to 9.30pm, and the Rt Revd Nicholas Holtam, former Bishop of Salisbury, is among those going.

Christian Aid says the roadshow is a chance to hear first hand what people in South Sudan are facing, “where conflict and the climate crisis have increased the daily challenges people are living with”. Places are booked through the charity’s Brighton event page.

Who is speaking

Angelina Nyajima Simon Jial is the founder and director of Hope Restoration South Sudan, which works with women and girls affected by gender-based violence. According to Christian Aid, she will talk about “the realities facing communities and the importance of locally-led change, as well as how churches can stand alongside, working for justice and hope”.

James Wani is Christian Aid’s Programme and Partnership Lead in South Sudan. He will speak about the importance of churches in creating change and how collective action can bring hope. The charity’s roadshow page says he has led its programme and partnership work with local civil society groups, faith groups and communities since 2018, covering peacebuilding, climate resilience, livelihoods and what it calls anticipatory action. It describes him as a South Sudanese development practitioner who “brings both professional expertise and lived experience”.

What the charity says

Lisa Britto, Church Engagement and Fundraising Advisor at Christian Aid, said: “These events are a great opportunity to meet other people who share a passion for ending poverty, hear directly from Christian Aid partners about their projects and find out how we can all work together to create real change in places like South Sudan.

“We can’t wait to get together with people and talk about all the amazing things we and our partners are doing. If you’re interested in finding out more, please visit our website to register for a place.”

Christian Aid’s local partners, the charity says, work alongside communities to help people build resilience, respond to emergencies and create sustainable change. The roadshow is also the way into its Harvest Appeal: the Brighton page promises stories from South Sudan, the work of Christian Aid’s supporters, and ideas for how churches and communities can carry on supporting it through prayer, fundraising and campaigning.
