The Brighton Times is an independent news and information site for Brighton and Hove. No connection to the council, no interest in whose side anything is on, and no story that does not have a document behind it.

Across the city

Our ground is the whole council area. Brighton and Hove, then Portslade, Aldrington and Hangleton to the west, Preston Park, Withdean, Patcham and Hollingbury going north, Hanover, Elm Grove, Queen’s Park and Kemptown on the eastern hills, the Moulsecoomb, Bevendean and Coldean estates, and Whitehawk, Ovingdean, Rottingdean and Saltdean out along the coast. A city of small neighbourhoods that rarely get written about individually, which is exactly why we try to.

What we do with the record

Every story has a named document behind it. An application on the city planning portal. A number buried in a committee paper. The crime figures the police publish by street each month. An insolvency notice in The Gazette. A hygiene rating from a council inspection. Automation does the watching and the first draft of routine items; what it does not do is decide what is true, and that stays with the document, which we link. The everyday pages are checked against what the council itself publishes, and dated.
