The Post Office inside TG Jones at Churchill Square will close, date to follow. St James Street and Melville Road are the two branches it names instead.

The Post Office counter inside TG Jones at Churchill Square is to close. The branch is at Unit 2, Churchill Square, BN1 2TA. The Post Office told customers in a letter published on Tuesday 27 October that it is “due to close shortly before the store closes”.

No date has been set. The Post Office says it is working with TG Jones to confirm one, and that the closure is “likely to be in the next few months”. Posters in the branch will give the date once it is known.

The letter is on the Post Office’s consultation page for the branch, branch number 261907. It classes the change as a “Branch Unplanned Closure”.

Why it is closing

The closure follows a restructuring plan announced by TG Jones, the Post Office’s retail partner in the shop. The Post Office says “some Post Office branches inside their stores will close” as a result, and that Brighton is one of them.

It says it is “in the early stages of reviewing applications to run the Post Office branch”. It wants to find a location nearby, and will give an update “as soon as possible”.

On the same day, the Post Office published notices for TG Jones branches in Farnham, Folkestone, Beeston and Llandudno.

Where to go instead

The letter names two alternative branches. It says both offer “a similar range of services”.

Branch Distance Opening hours Access
St James Street Post Office, 20 St James Street, BN2 1RF about 0.6 miles Mon to Fri 8am to 6.30pm, Sat and Sun 9am to 5.30pm wide automatic doors, level access
Melville Road Post Office, 20 Melville Road, Hove, BN3 1UB about 0.7 miles Mon to Fri 9am to 5.30pm, Sat 9am to 12.30pm, Sun closed wide door, ramp

The Post Office describes both routes as “along varied terrain”. It says there is pay by phone parking near each, including disabled bays, and local buses serve both.

A second Brighton counter gone this autumn

Tivoli Post Office, at 1 Matlock Road, BN1 5BF, has already closed. The Post Office first gave its closing date as 23 October. An updated letter brought that forward to Wednesday 23 September at 5.15pm.

What it means for you

  • Nothing changes yet. The Churchill Square counter keeps trading until a date is set.
  • Watch for posters in the branch. The Post Office says that is where the date will go first.
  • There is no public consultation. The Post Office’s rules treat an unplanned closure as a “notify” change, so the decision on a replacement is not put out to consultation.
  • You can still comment. Write to comments@postoffice.co.uk or FREEPOST Your Comments. Comments are not kept confidential unless marked “In Confidence”.
  • Check before you travel. Hours at the alternatives can change. The Post Office’s branch finder has the latest details.
