Two Brighton and Hove restaurants were rated 1, major improvement necessary, in August. 52 of 66 inspections scored 5. Every low rating, and two more from July.
Two Brighton and Hove restaurants were rated 1, “major improvement is necessary”, after food hygiene inspections in August. They were the lowest of 66 ratings from August inspections now on the national register. Most of the city did well: 52 businesses scored the top rating of 5.
The figures come from the Food Standards Agency’s food hygiene rating register for the Brighton and Hove council area, retrieved on 3 October 2026. Dates are inspection dates. The council’s food safety officers carry out the inspections and the register is updated as ratings are published, so the count for any month can grow for some weeks afterwards.
The two rated 1
| Business | Address | Inspected | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deniz Burger | 9 Western Road, Hove | 4 August | 1 |
| Sushimania | 15 to 17 Middle Street, Brighton | 10 August | 1 |
A rating of 1 is the second lowest on the six-point scale. Neither entry carries a right to reply from the business, and the register shows no new rating pending for either.
Rated 3, “generally satisfactory”
Seven businesses scored 3:
- Billies Cafe, 34 Hampton Place, Brighton (26 August)
- Coco Di Mama, at the petrol station on Mill Road, Brighton (12 August)
- Give It A Try Catering at the Crown and Anchor, 213 Preston Road, Brighton (25 August)
- Kateh, 35 Montpelier Road, Brighton (26 August)
- One Love And Two Choice, 2 Preston Circus, Brighton (20 August)
- Tutto, 20 to 22 Marlborough Place, Brighton (6 August)
- Vitaminka, 63 Boundary Road, Hove (19 August)
Five more scored 4, “good”: Bella Bar and Restaurant on St James’s Street, Cafe Venus on Western Road in Hove, Efes Restaurant on Preston Street, Goemon Hand Roll Bar on Preston Street and Off The Cone on Madeira Drive.
The top-rated
The 52 businesses rated 5 ranged from seafront restaurants to children’s holiday clubs. Among them:
- Riddle and Finns on Meeting House Lane
- Brighton Shellfish and Oyster in the Kings Road Arches (spelled “Shelfish” on the register)
- The Reading Room at Saltdean Lido
- The Railway Inn on Station Road, Portslade
- The Guinea Pig at the Dyke on Dyke Road
- Martlets Hospice on Wayfield Avenue, Hove
- Saltdean Food Bank at St Nicholas Church Hall
- Hove Rugby Club bar at Hove Recreation Ground
Seven summer holiday clubs and activity schemes run in schools and leisure centres also scored 5, including the Brighton Swimming Centre HAF Club on Eastern Road.
July ratings published since our last report
When we reported July’s ratings on 5 August, all 21 on the register were 5s. The register now holds 63 ratings from July inspections, and two of the late additions were rated 1:
| Business | Address | Inspected | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neo Cafe Breakfast And Lunch | 89 Western Road, Hove | 16 July | 1 |
| Shanes Kitchen | 72 to 74 High Street, Rottingdean | 20 July | 1 |
Two more July inspections scored 3: Canham and Sons on Church Road, Hove, and DRNK on Ship Street. Neither of the 1-rated businesses has a right to reply on the register.
September’s ratings are still arriving. The 25 published so far are all 5s; we will report the full month once the register has caught up.
How the ratings work
Food safety officers look at three things (Food Standards Agency guidance):
- how hygienically food is handled, prepared, cooked, cooled and stored
- the physical condition of the premises, including cleanliness, layout, ventilation and pest control
- how the business manages food safety, including its processes, training and systems
The scale runs from 5, “very good”, to 0, “urgent improvement is necessary”. A rating of 1 means “major improvement is necessary”.
A business can appeal in writing within 21 days of being told its rating. It can also publish a “right to reply” on the register at any time before its next inspection. Once it has made improvements, it can ask for a re-rating visit. In England a free re-visit “will not usually take place in the first three months following the inspection”.
What it means for you
A low rating describes what the inspector found on the day. It is not a permanent verdict, and both businesses rated 1 in August can improve and ask to be re-inspected. Until then, the rating on the register is the one that counts, and it should match the sticker in the window.
Before you eat somewhere new, search it by name or postcode at ratings.food.gov.uk. Check the inspection date as well as the score. If you think a business is breaking food hygiene rules, you can report it to Brighton & Hove City Council’s food safety team.
