Wear It Pink day is Friday 23 October. Chris Ward MP backed Breast Cancer Now's campaign in Westminster and says Sussex Cancer Centre will open in 2029.

Wear It Pink day is this Friday, 23 October, and Chris Ward, the MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, has joined Breast Cancer Now’s campaign event in Westminster ahead of it.

The event, held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, asked MPs from across the UK to wear pink in Parliament to raise awareness of the disease. Breast Cancer Now says Wear It Pink is in its 25th year and has raised more than £45 million since 2002, money that goes to research and to support for people affected by breast cancer.

What Chris Ward said

“I was proud to join Breast Cancer Now in Westminster to support Wear It Pink and stand with everyone affected by breast cancer,” he said.

“It was great to speak to representatives from Breast Cancer Now about the vital work they do to fund research and support people living with breast cancer. Early diagnosis, advances in treatment and access to the right support can make such a difference to people’s lives.”

He also used the visit to raise the new Sussex Cancer Centre. “I also discussed our brand-new, state-of-the-art Sussex Cancer Centre, which is due to open in 2029 and will treat more than 60,000 patients a year,” he said. “It’s an important step forward for cancer care in our area and will help ensure more patients can access the treatment they need closer to home.”

The release does not say what was discussed about the centre beyond the opening year and patient numbers, or whether any commitment came out of the conversation.

What it means for you

If your school, workplace or group wants to take part on Friday, Breast Cancer Now’s Wear It Pink page has the sign-up, printable posters and games, and a JustGiving route for paying in what you raise. The idea is simple: wear something pink on the day and donate.

Mr Ward was at the Rottingdean Delivery Office over Royal Mail delays on Monday, and last week backed a cut in the tax on pub beer.
